We’re happy and honored to announce that our light field technology paper “Steered Mixture-of-Experts for Light Field Images and Video: Representation and Coding” has been rewarded with the 2021 IEEE Multimedia Prize Paper Award. This is an annual award for one original paper in the field of multimedia published in the IEEE Transactions of Multimedia (12 issues per year) during the previous three years. The winner was announced during the closing session of IEEE’s International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME 2021).

The paper presents one of the first-ever coding formats that natively and inherently has all necessary characteristics to meet the requirements of future 6DoF applications, and the award recognizes the paper’s timeliness, originality, and high potential impact in the area of light field technology and plenoptic imaging. This work was part of Ruben Verhack’s joint PhD research at IDLab-MEDIA (Ghent University – imec) and at the Communication Systems Group (TU Berlin, Prof. Thomas Sikora).
At IDLab-MEDIA, we continue to develop this light field technology, so stay tuned for more features and better performance!
